The rays of prophecy focus on the end or Harvest of the age.
Daniel prophesied about the "time of the end" being an "appointed
time," but the prophecies were "sealed" - closed, not to be understood
until the time of the end. Dan. 12:9 Daniel told about three time periods:
Dan. 12:7 - "a
time, times and an half" [360 x 3-1/2 = 1260 years] Dan. 12:11 - "a thousand two hundred
and ninety days" [1290 years]
Dan. 12:12 - "the thousand
three hundred and five and thirty days" [1335 years] |
539 A.D.
Dan. 12:11 gives us the starting date for these periods of
time. "...from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the
abomination that maketh desolate set up..."
The one special false doctrine, or fundamental error, which
led to the full rejection of Papacy by our Lord and made it in his sight the desolating
abomination was the Mass. Christ's sacrifice was once for all and forever - a continual,
ever efficacious sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. However, each time the Mass is
offered in sacrifice, the false doctrine claims a fresh sacrifice of Christ for the
particular persons and sins to which the priest offering it mentally applies it. The
corner stone of the Reformation was, that the forgiveness of sins was effected by Christ
alone, as a consequence of his sacrifice at Calvary, and not by indulgences, confessionals
and masses.
Although Papacy existed before 539 A.D., it wasn't recognized
as the chief authority in Rome until the fall of the Heruli, the Ostrogoths, and finally
the Exarchs in A.D. 539.
Where two events occurring at different times are mentioned,
as in this case, we must always reckon from the time that both were true. Although the
Mass took the daily sacrifice away earlier, it wasn't until 539 A.D. that the Papacy was
"set up" in power in Rome.
1260
Years to 1799 A.D.
539 A.D. + 1260 Years = 1799 A.D.
In 1799 A.D. Napoleon and his forces humiliated the Pope. The
Pope was obliged to cede a part of his Papal territories and pay a sum of money [about six
million dollars], gold and silver, besides other valuables -- statuary, paintings, etc.,
as an atonement.
The fulfillment of these conditions brought the Pope to the verge of ruin. On February 15,
1798, the French General Berthier carried the pope a prisoner to France, where he died the
following year.
1290
Years to 1846 A.D.
539 A.D. + 1290 Years = 1829 A.D.
In 1829 A.D. a movement began among Christians which
anticipated the Lord's second presence. William Miller, with others, began calling
attention to prophetic truths, relating them to our Lord's 2nd advent. A class
called the "sanctuary" was cleansed from many defiling doctrinal errors. As
Daniel had prophesied [12:10] - "Many shall be purified and made white and
tried...the wise shall understand."
1335
Years to 1874 A.D.
539 A.D. + 1335 Years = 1874 A.D.
A special blessing was due to those watching in 1874 A.D.
"Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and
five and thirty days." Dan. 12:12
The special blessing was the Lord's second presence in 1874
A.D. as Bridegroom and Reaper to the church in the Harvest at the end of the Gospel Age.
For nearly 2,000 years, the suffering persecuted,
self-sacrificing, consecrated ones have anxiously waited for the Master's coming. And now
he has come! The Lord is indeed present. And the time is at hand for the setting up of his
Kingdom, and the exaltation and glorification of his faithful bride.
